FAQ
What does 'el origen' mean?
What does 'el origen' mean?
el origen stands for the origin and our origin is in Latin America. We produce and sell delicious organic snacks from Latin America, for which we work directly with small local farmers.
Latin America is a region rich in history, culture and tradition and has a lot to offer. We already know some of it in Europe - but there is still so much more to discover. While we offer you great snacks that have been popular there for years, we can do a lot good locally with our production (such as promoting organic farming or improving the living standards of local farmers).
How do you spell el origen?
How do you spell el origen?
“el origen” [oˈɾixɛ̃n] is Spanish and means the origin. But since we operate globally, you can also pronounce our company name in English (we do as well ;)).
Wer sind die Menschen hinter el origen?
Wer sind die Menschen hinter el origen?
We are a young, highly motivated, currently still small team in Hamburg with lots of ideas and ambitions to make global trade a little fairer, especially for Latin America. Want to find out more about us? Then take a look at our team page. :)
Why do you produce in Latin America?
Why do you produce in Latin America?
We can make a big difference there with our small product range. By growing organic manioc and plantain in Ecuador, we can expand organic farming, help local farmers to earn a higher income and contribute to protecting the Amazon region - the lungs of our world. Latin America is also very close to our hearts for personal reasons: some of us have our roots there, others have lived on the continent for a long time or have fallen in love with the region in other ways.
Why do you only have plantain and manioc chips in your range?
Why do you only have plantain and manioc chips in your range?
We have lots of ideas and are highly motivated to add even more incredibly tasty products to our range. As a small team, however, we want to focus on our plantain and manioc chips for the moment. If you have any suggestions as to what we should definitely include in our range, please feel free to send us an e-mail to hi@elorigenfood.com.

I pay attention to certain things in my diet / I have food intolerances. Can I eat your products?
Our products consist of only a few ingredients: Organic plantain or organic manioc roots, organic sunflower oil and spices. They are vegan and gluten-free. You can find more information about the ingredients and nutritional values on the product pages or on the back of the packaging. If you have any further questions, please send us an email or contact us via Instagram.
Why is your packaging made of plastic?
Why is your packaging made of plastic?
Our chip bag is currently made of plastic, as we haven't yet found a sustainable alternative that works. The challenge is that we have to ensure that neither air gets in nor anything gets out. As our chips are made with oil, it makes the situation a bit more complex. We are already in talks with packaging producers and are looking for alternatives. The issue is at the top of our sustainability agenda. If you have any ideas, please email us at hi@elorigenfood.com.
What characterizes your engagement?
What characterizes your engagement?
We source our products from direct trade in Latin America. This means that we work directly with a local producer who employs small farming families in their cooperatives. Direct trade creates long-term partnerships that enable local farmers to reliably receive a higher wage and achieve a higher standard of living, and all the ingredients in our chips come from certified organic farming. We want to increase the proportion of organic farming in the Amazon region and thus contribute to the protection of the Amazon region.
What is manioc?
What is manioc?
Here in Europe, manioc roots are still relatively unknown, although they are one of the world's fundamental foods. The root originally comes from South America and is also at home in India, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. Manioc is also known as cassava or yuca and can be prepared like a potato: boiled, baked, fried or roasted, it tastes good to (almost) everyone. Dried and ground, manioc flour is a gluten-free alternative to wheat flour.
Manioc is a very climate-resistant plant and is very easy to grow. It can cope with long periods of drought. Of course, manioc tastes best from el origen - made into delicious chips 😉.
What are plantains?
What are plantains?
Plantains are the savory siblings of our well-known bananas. Here in Europe, plantains are not yet very widespread. In many Latin American and South African countries, however, they are a staple food, and no wonder: they are rich in carbohydrates, fiber, potassium and magnesium and at the same time low in sugar, fat and sodium. Plantains are only edible when fully ripe, when the skin is almost completely black on the outside. You can recognize ripe plantains by their almost completely black skin. They can be boiled, sliced, fried or roasted, and of course plantains taste best when made into delicious chips from el origen 😉
